Art for Science
Graphical Abstracts
Graphical abstracts are a visually appealing, unique and concise way to summarise research papers or projects. To ensure my research can be quickly conveyed without needing to read the research itself, I have developed a number of graphical abstracts that have been published in scientific journals and used across social media platforms to generate interest in my work.
I developed this graphical abstract, which was published in Frontiers in Marine Science alongside a research paper

Science by Video
Video abstracts are also a quick way to condense long projects or research papers into short fun to watch videos. Below are a few examples of videos I have made to accompany my scientific research, and to share news of my latest publications.
Graphics for Science
I enjoy incorporating graphic design and illustrations to help communicate my science, latest news, or to accompany outreach material.
I worked as the scientific illustrator and communicator for the WWF Arctic Heriot-Watt University project focusing on the sustainable development of Arctic port infrastructure. The illustrations featured on the WWF website, on the project website, in the workshop report, in the associated publication, in social media posts, and were used as Zoom backgrounds for the workshop facilitation team.
In my research publications I try to combine creative flair with communicating the important scientific information, through clever use of graphic design. So far, my infographics and illustrations have featured in the Polar Journal, Frontiers in Marine Science and Aquatic Mammals.
Maps for Science
As a keen proponent of spatial data analysis, I am experienced in ArcGIS Pro and Desktop, QGIS, and mapping in R and Adobe Illustrator. I have helped support both under- and post-graduate courses teaching GIS (geographic information systems), and really enjoy using GIS for a variety of components within my PhD and to complement my other research work.
Art
I enjoy being creative - particularly taking some of my favourite photos from field work and transferring them into watercolours.
